Established in 2010, IMALIVE works to educate young adults about the warning signs of mental illness, encourage open conversations around suicide prevention and broaden awareness of the impact of mental health.

Throughout the fair, students participated in activities designed to make those conversations engaging and approachable. Students left their mark through graffiti art on the Keep Showing Up canvas, put their knowledge to the test with a 鈥淔act or Fiction鈥� game and brain game, and participated in a secret-sharing station.

The event was also a campus-wide effort. Student Involvement, Residence Life, Campus Ministry and student volunteers joined CAPS in showing unified support for student well-being. Community representatives, including psychiatrist Dr. Jeremy Yang, Uwill and DMHS, were also on hand to offer support, information and guidance.

By creating a space where students could learn, participate and connect with available resources, the IMALIVE聽 Mental Health Fair reinforced an important message across the 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 community: conversations about mental health topics are vital.

What began more than a decade ago at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University has grown into an ongoing effort to address food insecurity, prevent food waste and serve neighbors throughout Hudson County.The Campus Kitchen at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University is approaching a major milestone of 200,000 pounds of recovered food.

Since beginning its work in September 2014 from a kitchen in the former 猫咪社区 Aedan鈥檚 convent, the Campus Kitchen has mobilized volunteers to recover excess food from local cafeterias, dining halls and community partners and repackage it into nutritious meals for those experiencing food insecurity. In 2024, the operation moved to the Mac Mahon Student Center, where the work continues today under the leadership of Erich Sekel, director of community service.聽

Currently, the Campus Kitchen provides approximately 500 meals to organizations and community members, including a veterans housing unit, Catholic Charities Behavioral Health Center, Magnificat House, Mercy House, P.E.R.C. Shelter and individual families.

The impact extends beyond providing a meal. By recovering food that would otherwise go to waste, the program gives food donor partners an opportunity to put excess food to use while also providing local nonprofits and shelters with weekly relief from the cost of providing dinner for their clients.

The work also reflects 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 Jesuit mission and its commitment to seeking justice for marginalized communities. Through the Campus Kitchen, volunteers address the connected issues of food waste and food insecurity while affirming the dignity of the individuals and families receiving the meals.

Providing a quality meal, according to the program鈥檚 mission, addresses far more than sustenance. It is also an opportunity to recognize the value and dignity of the University鈥檚 neighbors and the nonprofit organizations that serve them.

A Community Effort

Reaching nearly 200,000 pounds of recovered food has been a collective effort.

Over the program鈥檚 12 years, more than 4,000 volunteers have participated, including 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 students, alumni and staff, as well as volunteers from local high schools, corporations and church groups. While the program is led by its director and leadership team, volunteers carry out much of the food recovery and meal preparation that keeps the Campus Kitchen operating.

The program has also developed relationships with food donors throughout the area. Current consistent donors include Restaurant Associates at Goldman Sachs, Sodexo at Jersey City Medical Center and Aramark Dining at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University. Through Table to Table, the Campus Kitchen also receives food recovered from DTCC and Fidelity Investments, along with catering from Lord Abbett.

For 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 students who participate, the Campus Kitchen provides a hands-on opportunity to engage with issues of social justice while directly serving the surrounding community.

Service Recognized

The Campus Kitchen鈥檚 work has also received recognition from organizations throughout the region.

In 2024, 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 received the Hunger Hero Award from Hudson County. In 2025, the University was named a Community Partner honoree by Garden State Development Corporation, followed by a Community Service Award from Catholic Charities in 2026.

As the Campus Kitchen approaches 200,000 pounds of recovered food, the milestone represents more than the amount of food saved over the years. It reflects thousands of volunteers, partnerships throughout the community and 12 years of turning excess food into meals for neighbors who need them.

Held September 1鈥�7, the tour was jointly hosted by the Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation.

Ten U.S. colleges and universities participated, including 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University, American University, Central Michigan University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Kentucky State University, The University of Chicago, University of California, Davis and Riverside, and University of Washington. Together with their Chinese peers, it was an opportunity to experience China through cultural immersion and authentic interactions commenced.

As part of the tour, students traveled to Shandong, the birthplace of Confucius, where they explored the history and influence of more than 2,500 years of Confucian thought. The group also spent time in Beijing, experiencing the city鈥檚 ancient past, and future with a tour of the Xiaomi EV car factory, while also engaging with Chinese students and communities. The tour ended with our students planting pine trees on Yanqi Island.

The program was designed to deepen students鈥� understanding of China through firsthand experiences while encouraging greater international connection and dialogue across the Asia-Pacific region.

猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 students were accompanied by Ernabel Demillo, professor and chair of the Department of Communication and Media Culture, and coordinated by Lan Jiang, Ph.D., interim director of the Center of Chinese Language Teacher鈥檚 Education at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚.

For Demillo and Jiang, the experience offered students an opportunity to look beyond cultural differences and recognize the common experiences shared by young people around the world.

鈥淔or our students, this was a trip of a life-time. Beyond the historical sites and technological innovations, I also believe one of the most meaningful aspects was the opportunity for our 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 students to engage with their U.S. and Chinese peers.鈥� said Demillo. 鈥淵oung people they met shared the same hopes and dreams that they do, despite the differences in culture.鈥�

Jiang said 鈥渢he students represented 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 well throughout the program, receiving recognition from organizers for their confidence, global perspective, cross-cultural adaptability and communication skills. During the week-long event, the organizers called me twice to commend our students, praising the confidence, global perspective, cross-cultural adaptability, and communication skills they demonstrated as exemplary university students. I am deeply grateful to Professor Demillo for her tireless dedication in taking charge and leading the students on this trip, and I look forward to her sharing more interesting stories with us.鈥�

This growth follows an unprecedented enrollment cycle with more than 7000 applications for admission, underscoring the growing demand for a 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 education. 鈥淭his fall鈥檚 record enrollment is a result of strategic efforts to showcase 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University as a Jesuit institution that stands out nationally and regionally for its recognized strengths in affordability, social mobility and value,鈥� stated President Hubert Benitez. 鈥淢ore and more students and their families recognize our position as an anchor institution in the NJ/NY metropolitan area; the commitment to an exceptional, accessible and affordable education; and the focus on academic excellence, student success and transformative opportunities.鈥�

With a historic enrollment cycle of almost 1000 students, the incoming class reflects the rich student body that makes 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 unique. The class consists of almost 800 new first-year students, over 100 transfer students, and almost 100 accelerated nursing students, originating from 40 countries, 14 states and 17 counties across New Jersey. The group represents 206 high schools, while 59 percent of students identify as first-generation college students.

With students coming from across the United States, New Jersey is the most represented state, followed by New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Students also hail from California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Maryland, Missouri, Delaware, and Vermont.

The Class of 2030 also brings a vast global perspective to campus, with students representing Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. The opportunities for sharing cultural experiences and world views throughout our campus are endless.

Significant enrollment growth is fueled by ongoing investments in academic programs, campus facilities and student support. The university continues to expand and enrich its academic offerings with innovative programs that meet educational needs and workforce demand. In addition to majoring in the more than 50 existing programs in the humanities, social science, business, education, health professions and natural sciences, this year students can pursue new majors in fields such as neuroscience, nutrition and project management, as well as new accelerated learning opportunities in fields such as mental health counseling, social work, nursing and educational leadership. The space, commonly known as the 鈥渂ubble,鈥� features a dynamic, high-performance environment for student-athletes and the broader community, with a FIFA-certified soccer turf and a track.

Moreover, the university has launched a new cohesive first-year success model that unifies academic advising, health and wellness, career preparation, financial assistance and disability services to offer comprehensive support and to ensure that each student is well positioned to succeed. New students were introduced to these programs during Welcome Week 2026, that kicked off the academic year with a celebration of community, connection, and Peacock Pride!

What is a Michaelmas Convocation? Fr. James Miracky, vice president of mission integration and ministry, offers us an explanation. 鈥淭he convocation takes its name from the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (Michaelmas), celebrated on September 29. In medieval England, Michaelmas was one of the four traditional 鈥楺uarter Days鈥欌�攑ivotal dates on the calendar that marked the change of seasons and the end of the agricultural harvest. And the 鈥榤as鈥� part of Michaelmas actually refers to the traditions of having mass on that day, at which the convocation would originally have been a part.鈥�

That鈥檚 the simple answer on the name鈥檚 origins, but how did we come to celebrate a Michaelmas Convocation at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University? That came from Robert I. Gannon, S.J., the first dean in 1930 as the school began reopening following World War I. As Fr. Gannon restructured the academics of what was then 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 College to still reflect the liberal arts and Jesuit tradition of its founding back in 1872, he also wanted to incentivize students to succeed. The Michaelmas Convocation would reward and recognize high achieving students with prizes and provide an opportunity for them to share essay defenses and capstone presentations from their classes. Fr. Gannon also championed academic oriented societies, personally founding The Order of the Cross Keys. That society and The Most Noble Order of the Peacock are recognized to this day at the current iteration of the Michaelmas Convocation at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University.聽

St. Michael鈥檚 attributed virtues are courage, strength, and commitment to justice, similar to the Jesuit values we celebrate at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University every day. At this year鈥檚 Michaelmas Convocation, taking place on Wednesday, September 30, the University will welcome as speaker Ann-Marie Nazzaro, Ph.D. 鈥�70, executive director emerita of the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders (FWGBD). Dr. Nazzaro is a true embodiment of those values, being one of the first women admitted to 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 College when it became co-educational and starting FWGBD with three other internationally renowned physicians. Their objective was to educate health providers about the array of blood disorders that directly impact women and girls.聽

From its history to who it celebrates, a Michaelmas Convocation is about more than opening a new academic year. It鈥檚 bringing together a university community in shared values to celebrate one another and those who contributed for its past to its future.聽
