A holistic and pluralistic approach to the comprehensive health/physical assessment of the adult-geriatric client. Principles of risk assessment are integrated. Students develop the knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose and evaluate these common conditions. Pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic tests and therapeutic management are discussed. The course provides students with a problem-based, case-study approach to understanding the complex healthcare needs of pediatric patients, from infancy through adolescence, as well as childbearing women. Emphasizing the role of the nurse practitioner as a provider, educator, and leader, the course offers in-depth experience in assessing, diagnosing, planning, and managing common health problems encountered in primary care settings. NU-602. Clinical Iii: Pediatric & Women's Health. 4.00 Credits.
This comprehensive clinical course integrates the study of advanced health assessment techniques, including history taking, physical examination, and laboratory/diagnostic procedures, to support the assessment and diagnosis of pediatric patients and childbearing clients. Designed for the advanced practice nurse (APN), the course emphasizes the importance of these skills in providing primary care within a family-centered context. The Key components of this course include clinical practice experiences where students will engage with direct patient care alongside an approved preceptor, gaining hands-on experience in Pediatric and Gynecological family primary care. A total of 200 direct patient care hours, with 140 hours dedicated to the pediatric population and 60 hours to Women's Health/OB family nursing care. Simulation exercises will be conducted on campus. These learning exercises will allow students to refine their clinical decision-making, diagnostic reasoning, and psychomotor skills in a controlled, supportive environment. The advanced practice role is explored through a holistic approach to care that includes patient and family education, counseling, direct hands-on patient care, and the promotion of wellness. Students will also address common pediatric and maternal health concerns, incorporating clinical decision-making skills to optimize the health outcomes for both pediatric patients and women. This didactic component of the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Capstone course serves as the culmination of advanced education, providing an opportunity for students to synthesize the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program. The course focuses on analyzing key patient care and healthcare system issues, guiding students in the development of actionable plans for improving patient outcomes and implementing organizational change. Students will engage in a scholarly project, under the mentorship of a faculty member, that synthesizes advanced practice knowledge to address significant nursing practice issues in the role of a Family Nurse Practitioner. In addition, the course incorporates the use of a resource, which will be thoroughly utilized to help students identify areas of strength and weakness in preparation for their board certification exam. NU-622. Clinical Iv: FNP Capstone. 3.00 Credits.
This clinical component of the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Capstone course provides students with 150 hours of supervised direct patient care clinical practice, precepted by a primary care provider. The practicum offers hands-on experience, allowing students to apply advanced practice knowledge and skills in a variety of healthcare settings with diverse patient populations. During the clinical experience portion of the course, students will actively engage in patient care, focusing on assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management, while refining their functional role as Family Nurse Practitioners. This clinical experience is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the demands of primary care practice and for certification as an FNP. Prerequisites: NU-558, NU-568, NU-572, NU-582, NU-592, NU-602, NU-612.
