{"id":4179,"date":"2015-07-07T10:33:25","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T14:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/news\/?p=4179"},"modified":"2015-07-16T16:06:17","modified_gmt":"2015-07-16T20:06:17","slug":"gerard-osullivan-ph-d-named-provost-and-vice-president-for-academic-affairs-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/07\/gerard-osullivan-ph-d-named-provost-and-vice-president-for-academic-affairs-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerard O\u2019Sullivan, Ph.D., Named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jersey City, N.J. \u2013 July 7, 2015 \u2013<\/strong> 猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s University today announced that Gerard O\u2019Sullivan, Ph.D., has been appointed to the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs for the University, effective July 1.\u00a0 Dr. O\u2019Sullivan most recently served as the vice president for academic affairs, as well as professor of English and theological studies, at Neumann University in Aston, Pa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith more than 18 years of experience in Catholic higher education, Dr. O\u2019Sullivan is an extraordinary educator who is well prepared to help lead 猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s to the next level of excellence and success,\u201d said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of 猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s University. \u201cWe are pleased to have him on campus and look forward to leveraging his expertise in this role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his time with Neumann University, Dr. O\u2019Sullivan helped lead the transition from college to university and played a central part in a major rebranding campaign, which ultimately led to increased enrollments. He administered\u00a0 a multi-million\u00a0 dollar\u00a0 renovation\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Neumann University\u00a0 Library and recruited\u00a0 and\u00a0 retained\u00a0 talented\u00a0 faculty from across\u00a0 the\u00a0 country\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 world. He secured and directed a $1.9 million federal Title III, Strengthening Institutions Program grant designed to increase four-year graduation rates through the creation of a walk-in advising center, a centralized developmental education program and a revised freshman year experience program. As a result, the institution realized a 15 percent increase in graduation rates. Among other accomplishments, he worked to generate\u00a0 new\u00a0 and effective\u00a0 faculty\u00a0 policies and created\u00a0 cost efficiencies, which\u00a0 helped\u00a0 generate\u00a0 large\u00a0 annual \u00a0operating\u00a0 margins.<\/p>\n<p>In his new role at 猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s, Dr. O\u2019Sullivan will play an integral role in developing the plans and programs to deliver the vision set forth in the University\u2019s new strategic plan titled, \u201cPathways to Distinction,\u201d which was approved by the Board of Trustees earlier this year. He will also lead recruitment efforts to hire and retain distinguished faculty and administrators.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Sullivan previously served as dean of arts and sciences and associate professor of English and religious studies at Felician College in Lodi, N.J. Prior to his role at Felician, he was assistant professor of English and literary studies and founding co-chair of the Program in Literary Studies at Fordham University. Dr. O\u2019Sullivan also served as an instructor of humanities and intellectual heritage at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCatholic higher education is not just my profession, it is my vocation,\u201d said Dr. O\u2019Sullivan. \u201c猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s mission resonates deeply for me because it emphasizes a student\u2019s capacity to excel and the Jesuit focus on <em>magis<\/em> or the call to do more in service to others. I am honored to be selected to join the 猫咪社区 Peter\u2019s community and I look forward to working with Dr. Cornacchia and the University\u2019s students, faculty and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. O\u2019Sullivan earned his B.A. in English and theology in 1981 from Fordham University and went on to obtain his M.A. in theological studies in 1985 from Vanderbilt University Divinity School. In 1994, he earned his Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Pennsylvania.
