From September 15 through October 15, the University will celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans and reflect on 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淧ioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,鈥 resonates with the University鈥檚 mission to empower the next generation of leaders and innovators.
A Legacy of Inclusion: Celebrating 25 Years as a HSI
Last year, 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 marked its 25th anniversary as a HSI, a significant milestone in the University鈥檚 history. As a HSI, 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 serves a student body that is more than 25 percent Hispanic, a reflection of its ongoing commitment to supporting the fastest-growing demographic in higher education.
Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., the first Hispanic president of 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚, expressed his pride in leading a University that has long embraced its Hispanic identity. 鈥淎s we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded that our students are poised to be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,鈥 said Dr. Benitez. 鈥淭his is a time to recognize the rich cultural diversity within our University and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our Hispanic students, faculty and alumni.鈥
Paving the Way for Latino Student Success
In line with its mission to support the success of Hispanic students, 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University has formally affiliated with Excelencia in Education, the nation鈥檚 leading organization dedicated to accelerating Latino student success in higher education. As part of this affiliation, President Benitez has joined the Presidents for Latino Student Success (P4LSS) national network, which consists of university leaders committed to fostering campus environments where Latino students, and all students, can thrive.
Student Voices: Celebrating the Hispanic Experience at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚
The University鈥檚 commitment to its Hispanic community can be seen through the stories of its students, who have found a welcoming and supportive environment at 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚.
Katherine Pena Sanchez 鈥25, a biology major, shared how 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 helped her thrive both academically and personally. 鈥淎t 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚, I鈥檝e found a community where I know I can always rely on others. The connections I鈥檝e made have supported me throughout my time here, and the faculty鈥檚 commitment to diversity and inclusion has been truly inspiring.鈥
Similarly, Benjamin Miranda-Ruiz 鈥27, a computer science major, expressed his gratitude for the welcoming atmosphere. 鈥淔rom the moment I first stepped onto campus, I knew that choosing 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 was a decision I鈥檇 never regret. The support I鈥檝e received from my classmates and the community has made me feel at home.鈥
Sociology major, Amberlyn Cruz Reyes 鈥27, also shared her experience of feeling included during Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. She highlighted an event dedicated to 鈥淒ia de los Muertos,鈥 where students of all backgrounds came together to learn about the traditions and customs of this significant celebration. 鈥淭he event was not only educational but also inclusive, allowing students to share their own experiences and participate in creative activities.鈥
Looking Ahead: A Call to Action
As 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚 University continues its celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to take part in the various events and activities on campus and online. From sharing stories on social media to attending on-campus gatherings, the university community is invited to honor Hispanic heritage and recognize the vital role it plays in shaping the future of 猫咪社区 Peter鈥檚.
